This is one
piece of equipment that you will always find in a raw food kitchen
because they are used all the time to strain nut milks and seed milks.
-
These are
simply a fine meshed bag made preferably from a natural material. More
often than not they are made of a fine meshed nylon material which does
the job.
-
To make nut
milks simply soak some nuts overnight and then blend them with water. Hold
the nut milk bag over another jug and pour the blended mixture in. Squeeze
the bag by hand to release all the milk.
-
To clean the
bag invert it over your compost bucket, shake out all the nut solids, and
then rinse it with clean water. Leave it somewhere warm and clean to dry
ready for the next time.
-
If you
haven't got a nut milk bag then you can try using a kitchen strainer instead.
Pick one with a suitably fine mesh and stir the contents with the handle of a wooden spoon rather than squash it.
That way you will get more of the milk and less of the debris. It's not
nearly as good as a nut milk bag because you can't squeeze all the milk
out.
-
For hemp
seed milk you really do need a nut milk bag as the seeds tend to grind up
very fine. Some of the debris will escape through the mesh of a sieve
making the milk a bit grainy.
-
When you
have finished using the bag, recycle the debris, and then turn the bag
inside out and give it good rinse. Give it a squeeze to get the water
off and leave it somewhere warm and clean to dry out, ready for next
time.
