Ingredients # mango (Mangifera indica)

mango (Mangifera indica)

  • The mango is the national fruit of India. "In India there are over 100 varieties of mangoes, in different sizes, shapes and colours. Mangoes have been cultivated in India from time immemorial."

  • There are hundreds of varieties. Here are just a few of the mango varieties that you may have come across:-

  • The Alphonso mango has a beautiful golden coloured flesh, is slightly larger and less perfumed than the Kesar , and just oh ... so delicious to eat! These too are in the UK from about April until June.

  • Haden mango

  • The Keitt mango is a late season mango cultivar that originated in southern Florida.

  • Kent mango

  • The Kesar mango (Kesar keri) - has a beautiful golden coloured flesh with an exotic slightly perfumed taste. These are really delicious just to eat on their own. They are available in the UK from about April until June.

  • The Maya mango is from Gambia or Israel and is available in the UK in the summer. When ripe this is a deliciously juicy thirst quenching mango.

  • Tommy Atkins mango

  • In the UK the best place to shop for Indian mangoes like the Kesar and Alphonso is, of course, in the Indian shops!
