“Let food be
thy medicine and medicine be thy food” - Hippocrates
Karyn Seroussi
Karen
Seroussi's had a small son Miles, who was diagnosed with autism at an
early age. With a huge amount of energy, focus and dedication, hours of
work and with the help of her husband and the scientific community, she
evolved a diet for Miles, and within a few years he no longer had
autistic behaviour.
The diet
evolved from this is primarily concerned with exclusion rather than a
focus on nutritional needs. The main components that are excluded are
dairy and gluten, that anybody on a raw food diet and lifestyle would
naturally exclude. But also excluded are fruits of the nightshade family
which includes peppers and tomatoes. It's worth understanding the
groundbreaking work here.
"Unraveling
the Mystery of Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder: A Mother's
Story of Research & Recovery" by Karyn seroussi. The thing I like about Karyn Seroussi's
book is that it is a success story. In the end, Karyn's son Miles is
declared free of autistic symptoms. There are many books about autism that
describe the behaviour of the child and battles to obtain the supporting
services and schooling. Karyn does this
too, but, uniquely she engages with the scientific community to unravel the
underlying biochemistry involved and take action on what is discovered.
There is one poignant moment in the book, where, having removed all dairy
and gluten from Miles's diet, she finds him licking the gum on brown
envelopes, only to discover that the gum contains gluten! This is by no
means a raw food book, but I think we all have something to learn from it,
particularly why we might want to exclude things from our diet.

“Karyn
Seroussi has written a superb, landmark book that will be of immense
interest to everyone - especially those concerned with autistic
children. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate Unraveling the Mystery of
Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder a perfect 10. Why so high?
The book is a multifaceted work, and each facet is a gem in itself.”
