Raw dog food
I hope
this page at least gets you thinking about what you feed your dog and
gives you an opening into some of the issues with dog food.
Dogs
should live into their twenties. Will yours?
All tinned dog food is of course cooked, as is anything in a tin. I
have yet to see a tin of dog food, of any brand, where the label clearly
states what's in it. Sure, on some of the better brands, there is a list
of ingredients, but these never give the percentage, so you still don't
know. Moreover, many of the ingredients listed are rather cryptic, so
you would need to do considerable research to understand exactly what
this means.
What about dried dog food? Well to me they look like about 95% dried
corn with some added ingredients. Does your dried dog food give the
percentages of ALL the ingredients?
Does it matter? Well I guess not, if you are happy to feed your dog
this way, and it's 100 percent healthy and lives a long and healthy
life. If not, you might want to investigate the alternatives.
If you do
decide to make your own dog food, there is a lot of information on the
internet to help you. There are a few books listed below too. If you
make your own dog food, at least you know what's in it. To save you
time, you can make it once a week and freeze it to use over the week.
If you are
still going to use tinned dog foods please remember that even the more
ethical companies still add fillers to their commercially available dog
food.

"Although
you may think all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests
in mind, this is not always the case. Current pet food regulations allow
manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to
your pet. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of pet
food really contain."
"Raw Diet
For Adults By Lew Olson, PhD Natural Health, LMSW-ACP
Preparing a raw diet for your dog is not hard, but for those who are
just starting out, the idea of it can be hard to get used as it is a
totally different way to feed your dog."
(Some confusion here. I'm not sure that there would
have been much goats milk or cheese in a "wild dog" diet, and I don't
think they had microwaves to warm stuff up in either. It's only humans
and guinea pigs that can't make their own vitamin C. Good marks for
trying though!)
